Wednesday Words- The Cook-Along

Hello Blog Friends!

It has been a while since we had a Wednesday Words post but I promised all the Day Camp Cook-Along families that I would put one together so you could enjoy seeing all our young chefs and the dishes they prepared.

Some parents do not wish to have their children’s faces shown on the Internet so we have been careful to respect their wishes.

The photos are grouped by episode and I am including the introductions to each recipe, provided by our chefs.

Season 5 of the Cook- along was entitled- Winter Comfort Foods, so the  3 recipes were chosen with that theme in mind 😊.

Episode #1 Chef Michelle (with sous-Chef Maria 😊)-

 Arnee’s Fruit Crumble.

Even though crumbles are popular in the UK, where my mum grew up, this recipe is one my mum got when she first moved to Canada from England, and I like the Canadian version more than the UK one! She almost always uses apples, but her favourite cooked fruit is rhubarb. She couldn’t make it with rhubarb at home, though, because my dad was very suspicious of the fact that rhubarb leaves are poisonous and was always “accidentally” running over our rhubarb plant with the lawn mower. Now that I live far away and my father has died, this recipe gives me a chance to think about my mum and remember my dad with a smile.

Episode # 2 Chef Jessica-

Squash Mac & Cheese

The first recipe Jessica learned how to make from scratch was macaroni and cheese, and it has been a menu staple ever since! There is something magical about the way butter, flour and milk work together to make a thick, creamy sauce- if you make it as many times as Jessica has you don’t even really need to measure anymore. Jessica has a lot of mac “n” cheese variations but adding roasted winter squash makes it the perfect antidote to cold and grey February.

Episode # 3 Chef Victor-

Grandmother’s Bread Pudding

This bread pudding recipe is from Victor’s maternal grandmother, who was born and raised in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Bread pudding, popular in the Commonwealth but especially in the Caribbean, is a fantastic dessert to use old, stale bread that would otherwise be wasted. Grandma would make this dessert anytime a baguette or loaf of bread was left forgotten on the counter. It remains a comfort food to Victor to this day.

Hoping this post brightens a dark February day 😊
