Well I was hoping to offer a special post today, featuring all the 2019 Day Camp Crafts, however, although a group a group of 7 helpers, from our Teams and committee, laboured for 2 ½ hours on the samples they were not able to finish them all before half of the group needed to head to their church for a worship music practice. SO, it looks as if I’m going to have to add “craft–making” to what is already a daunting “to-do” list for the coming week!  Hopefully I will be able to either publish the photos as a separate post or devote next week’s regular post exclusively to crafts. One way or the other I’m determined to have the post up within the next week since host communities are already asking to see the crafts 😊
There have been some good pieces added to the Day Camps puzzle this week as well as a few disappointments. On the positive side we have another Toronto area Day Camp confirmed, meaning that we are down to an overall 5 empty slots in the schedule still needing to be filled. Just today I made contact with a possible location in BC but it turns out to be a very small congregation without a lot of “people power” to offer local help so it remains a bit of a long shot.
Sadly, we also heard that no one from the York Region of Toronto has applied for the 3 Team Member positions, which that area sponsors. This is bit of a blow as we have counted on those 3 additional members for the past 4 summers and their presence amongst has been such a blessing.
But with both bad and good news we must keep forging on as we are now into the month of May and time is of the essence.
On Tuesday morning I had a very nice visit with Brett Cane, who is at the start of another marathon trip to several continents but made time for a cup of coffee with me, for which I was most grateful. Another morning I had a Zoom meeting with Lisa, who will be one of the facilitators when we hold a Blanket Exercise Workshop during the Training Retreat and next Tuesday I have a morning meeting with the Principal of the Montreal Diocesan Theological College who we hope will agree to be one of the evening speakers during the Retreat.
Fortunately my cell phone is back in service after a 2-week hiatus while it was being repaired in Ottawa. Victoria mailed it back and happily it arrived on Thursday afternoon.  This week I also sent out Kick Off Event invitations to the Montreal Area host communities. The Event will be taking place on the first weekend in June and it is hoped we get a reasonable turnout this year.
Outside of Day Camps work I, managed to do a bit of interior house painting one afternoon and have cut out a darling baby outfit for the newborn daughter of some long-time Day Camp friends whose first child was born a week ago.
The weather is supposed to warm up next week so I plan to restain the front stairs, touch up the paint on the wrought iron deck railings and maybe also do some touch ups of other exterior paint. It is a bit tricky working outside because I still cannot leave Thomason alone in the house and tying him up next to wet paint does not sound like a very good idea 😊.
It will soon be time to start cooking coconut rice for the Teriyaki Bowls we are having for dinner, so I had best finish off with a recipe.
I’m really into “Bowls” of all kinds, they make great all in one dinners. On Thursday evening we enjoyed …
California Barley Bowls
  • 1 cup hulled barley
  • 2 ripe avocados, sliced
  • ¼ cup toasted pecans
  • 1 cup spring greens
  • 1 cup crumbled feta cheese
Lemon-Yoghurt Sauce
  • 1 cup plain yoghurt
  • zest and juice of 1 lemon
  • 2 Tbsps. fresh chives, minced
  • salt & pepper to taste
Combine the barley with 2½ cups water and bring to the boil, reduce the heat and simmer covered for 45-60minutes or until cooked but not mushy.  Meanwhile combine the sauce ingredients in a small bowl.
When ready to serve, divide the greens between 2 serving bowls, top with the barley, nuts, feta and avocado. Serve accompanied by the sauce.
Makes 2 generous servings.
